    Transalp XL700VA removing both wheels

Can anybody give me a tip on how you can removed both wheels, and leave the bike in the garage? I have a paddock rear stand and I want to take both wheels, loose, for new tyres this winter. I have thought about sawn 4 x 4 timbers for the rear swingarm packing and using four 4 x 4 timbers to construct a gantry to hang the front end by the bars. What you think?

A block of wood under the frame and use a car Jack to raise and hold the front of the bike of the ground.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE

1: Centre Stand. Take it off once you're done if you're an 'off-roader' and need the additional ground clearance
    or
2: Abba Stand - If there's an adaptor to suit the TA?

Far cheaper than your time sawing and screwing timber plus the cost of the replacement bits you might need for your bike if your woodworking skills aren't up to all that.

    Both Wheels Removal CAUTION !

You will of course ensure that kids and pets can't topple the Transalp whilst it is defence-less / wheel-less ?

I used a rear track stand and refitted the front axle to allow me to support the forks on 2 axle stands (before I bought a centre stand). That was secure enough while my wheels were away for rebuild.

    1. Ride it to the tyre place and let them do it.

    2. Take wheels one at a time

I left my vara balanced on the centre stand for a couple of days once. It was huge relief to get a wheel back in. It's not recommended.

Re: Transalp XL700VA removing both wheels

How come no-one's mentioned a front paddock stand to go with the rear one - surely that's the obvious solution? They're not expensive and once you have one you'll wonder how you ever did without (front wheel cleaning, for example, if you don't have a centre stand).

I use one that lifts from the bottom of the forks which is fine for wheel changing/cleaning but one that lifts from the steering stem (slightly more expensive) also allows for easy fork removal so is more flexible as long as it doesn't foul any fairing panels.

Re: Transalp XL700VA removing both wheels

I too have a rear paddock stand, but found it fouled the axle nut so I could not withdraw the spindle.

    Failing that

Purchase large threaded bar (I forget the OD) and two nuts - say 24 inch long
Thead bar through the two lugs for centre stand. Nuts tight on each side to prevent bar/bike from moving.
At the high side of bar, place blocks underneath.
At low side, carefully jack up and place blocks of equal height under other side of bar. Keep the side stand down just in case.
Bike should lift onto front wheel and raise the rear for removal

    For front wheel removal

    Replace rear
Jack under front of bike to lift front
    Remove front wheel

It is a bit precarious, but placing the block at the extremities of the bar makes it more stable.

...and to paraphrase Haynes manuals - dis-assembly is the reverse of assembly.

I guess this depends upon the design of the paddock stand - slightly wider cups than my stand has wouldn't fit on my 650 swingarm (because of the sprocket guard thing underneath) and even with mine I have to tip the bike to get the rear wheel spindle out. Somewhat precarious, but it works.....

Wish I could remember where I got my stand but it can be used clear of axel , and was , wheel off last week for a new trye.

However not tried yet but I am a bit worried about the stability on the front stand for wheel removal at the the rear "cups" my front one is just like little pegs that sit under the fork tubes ( if you can understand?)
